On May 16, 2018, I took my AP English Exam. I have previously taken another AP test, so I was not surprised by the set up of the testing area. However, I was surprised by the number of people taking AP English. The gym was very crowded and getting everyone set up did take a while. The clock was also out of my vision, so I'm glad that I brought a watch. When the test started, I was on a roll with reading. My reading of each question however was slow. I couldn't seem to decide on an answer and letters did consecutively repeat. I tried to get each article and questions don in fifteen minutes since it was four articles in an hour, but I spent too much time on the eighteenth century passage questions. As a result, I had to guess some of the answers for the last passage. I also didn't like the fact that the last passage had so many questions. For the essays, I definitely felt a lot more confident because I wrote up to what looks like five hundred words and I had a lot to say. I also felt good about the argument essay because I didn't just blank out and write something random. Overall, I thought that my multiple choice was not the best I've done all year, but my essays may have been.

Satirical Project Questions
White Supremacy
The topic that my group choose was White Supremacy. By definition, it is the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. Although New York City is a lot more diverse than the rest of this country, I felt that this problem should be clearly addressed. One of the main reasons is because by this September, I will be applying to colleges of my choice. While affirmative action exists, many universities around the country do have a majority of white. I believe that minorities deserve the same chance as white. In addition, the mindset that certain white people have that their superior to other races creates a toxic mind. The United States is a melting pot full off ethnicities. Just because the country is majority white, doesn't mean they deserve special privileges. Besides, the native inidialns were here first. The word "native" in their name says is all. Even so, I think that this problem exists in society because children of White Supremacist were raised to think a certain way or that want to feel special and important. Francis Lewis High School is very diverse although its majority asians. As a result, I don't feel that White Supremacy exists in the school nor have I met one. However, I do believe that it does exist in other states, especially in the south. With a look back in history, famous White Supremacist groups such as the KKK did exist and still do today. I don't believe that the mindset of these people have been extinguished.
The video my groups mates created addressed the issue because it was somewhat funny. This will help catch the viewer's attention. In addition, the clip is very ironic with a clear view of the problem it is addressing so viewers won't be confused. Although I was not in the video, I did help pick the topic of White Supremacy and gather ideas for the clip. In addition, I helped pick out the satire to use for this project and I wrote the verbal irony paragraph for the group paper.

The Story of an Hour Analysis
In 1894, the first women's rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York calling for equal voting rights for men and women. As a strong believer and supporter of the Women's Movement, writer Kate Chopin wrote and had Vogue magazine publish the story, "The Story of an Hour." By doing so, she hopes to portray how women felt about being restrained by marriage and men. To emanate how women feel, Chopin utilizes repetition, metaphor, and imagery.
In the story written by Chopin, Louise or Mrs. Mallard, finds out that her husband was killed in a railroad disaster from her sister Josephine. At first, Louise wept and felt heartbroken. However, as she calms down, she repeats the words, "free, free, free!" in lines 12 and 13. Chopin choses to utilize the word "free" with an exclamation point multiple times to portray Louise's realization that she is no longer trapped by her husband. It also brings attention to the readers, which at that time were women reading Vogue magazine, the joy Louise feels and the joy they could feel if women all around didn't need their husbands support to live. In addition, in line 16, "Free! Body and soul free!" these words get a line by themselves to emphasize Louise's realization of a new life after her husband's funeral. In addition, Chopin utilizes the use of the word, "open" multiple times throughout the story as a way to represent that Louise is finally free to live her own life. As Mrs. Mallard open's the window, she's able to breathe into the fresh new air and embrace the new found freedom in her life. As a result, this new sense of freedom overwhelms her feeling of sorrow for her dead husband.
In "The Story of An Hour," when Mrs. Mallard first heard the news of her husband's death, she grieved, as a common reaction in losing a loved one. Surprisingly though, one she is alone in her room, she isn't so sad anymore. She seems relieved. To represent this, in lines 18 and 19, "...she was drinking in a very elixir of life..." This metaphor reveals to the reader that the tragic death of her husband was actually an eye opening view of the world for Mrs. Mallard. She could finally live her life the way she wanted to without restraint by her husband. Another metaphor shows up in the last line, "...she had died of heart disease of joy that kills." This is an ironic metaphor because Mrs. Mallards was so happy that her husband is dead and was looking forward to the years of having to just worry about herself. Yet, as she exited her room with pride, her husband unlocks the front door to their house and enters. As Mrs. Mallard sees her husband, all of her joy feels as if it was struck by a spear and into her heart. In other words, she had a heart attack that her husband didn't die, so she died instead.
In, The Story of the Hour, Chaplin, utilizes imagery to allude to the dramatic ending. As Mrs. Mallard sits in her room, we see the details of nature she sees. The reader is forced to take in the sky, the trees, and the wind. While the reader is caught in the image of nature and the character’s surroundings, the reader is then able ignore some the subtle hints. This takes the audience away from death of her husband. As a result, the audience does not think to ask what will happen to Mrs. Mallard. For example, she is now a widow, so is she left to raise children alone? The reader instead focused their attention on the elements of the surrounding. Everything is peaceful and joyful, when "BAM!" her husband is not dead. Because of all the dramatic and subtle use of language throughout the story, the reader didn't predict the dramatic change in the story before it happens. Which makes it even more dramatic.
This story was published in Vogue magazine, a women's best friend, and was a perfect choice. As a supporter of the Women's Movement, most people would expect her to write a speech for supporters. Interestingly though, Kate Chopin sharp-wittedly created a story as a way to communicate to women all over the United States on how men and marriage restrict women to their full capabilities. She created a very emotional and ironic story that never sided, but captivated the reader's attention to read to the very end. Because of the time period, many readers wondered how a women could live without a husband. Instead of creating a mournful widow, Chopin created one that realized the freedom she was gaining because of her husband's death. This story is showing readers that women are strong by themselves too.

Technology For Students
Subject: a high school student
Audience: school board
Purpose: convince the school to provide iPads for students during class
Subject: use of technology during class
Have many of you seen teens walking around with a backpack that looks like its for camping or heard a loud thump when they dropped their backpacks. Well with technology such as iPads or tablet it will lighten the student's load and enhance their education.
In our school, there are no lockers provided for the students. As a result, we have to carry all our school supplies throughout our entire school day. In the beginning of the school year, our backpacks are very light, but by December, our backpacks are filled with folders, notebooks, and binders stuffed with papers. Not only are all there papers harmful to trees, but also student's backs especially since most teens still have growing bodies. If students were given electronic devices to use throughout their day, not only will their load be lightened by a lot, but it can also improve the way they learn. According to National Geography, "Students saw learning gains after as little as 20 minutes of study on the iPad, the research found..." The research experiment done in there article showed that although both students with iPads and without iPads learned, the iPad really helped students clear up misconceptions.
Yes, providing an iPad for every student is expensive and can be a distraction. But truthfully, investing in an iPad for every student is like investing in their future for a better education. In addition, schools can simply block and download apps that they want the students to use. Furthermore, it saves a lot of money when it comes to online textbooks vs paper textbooks. Before you decide whether or not spending the money on an iPad for every student is a smart decision, just think of all the smiling kids with a straight backs thanking you for making their life in high school a lot easier to travel and learn.

All About Me
My name is Cynthia Wang and I am sixteen years old. At home, I live with my mom and dad. I like to play a lot of sports, but my top pick is basketball. I've been playing it since elementary school and my favorite NBA team is the Golden State Warriors. I have a weird obsession with udon noodles, eggs, and fruits. Interestingly, I have eaten a apple everyday at school since my first day of school.
As a person, I am very adventurous and daring. Though I won't deny the fact that I can be lazy sometimes. Every summer, I go back to Hong Kong and Taiwan to visit my relatives. I definitely enjoy spending time with them, but sometimes the weather there is just too hot. Also, Taiwan gives me too many mosquito bites. Because I have traveled a lot since day one one day I hope to visit a variety of places. One place I hope to visit is Australia because when its hot around the world, its nice and cool there.
